Crazy Football
FC Sækó is a football club for men and women with mental health problems, where exercise, fellowship and joy go hand in hand.
The Story of FC Sækó
FC Sækó is an independent football club for men and women with mental health problems. The club plays a significant role in society by helping to improve mental and physical health — giving people the opportunity to meet others, play football and, most importantly, have fun sharing the joy of the beautiful game.
The club was started in November 2011 as a joint project between Hlutverkasetur, the City of Reykjavík Social Services and the psychiatric ward at Landspítali National Hospital, and was formally established in 2014. It’s really about the fellowship: getting people out of their homes and breaking the isolation they often find themselves in. On the training pitch and in matches, everyone is equal – titles and diagnoses stay outside the field.

In 2018, FC Sækó received the UEFA Grassroots Gold Award for outstanding grassroots work — recognised as an exemplary project that uses football to improve mental and physical health. The photo shows then-UEFA President Aleksander Čeferin presenting the award to FC Sækó chairman Bergþór Grétar Böðvarsson.

Trips & Other Projects
Trips and international tournaments are the highlights of the year at FC Sækó. From our first trip in 2014 to the E.A.S.I. Cup in Austria in 2025, we have used football to break isolation and build players’ confidence.
These projects give members the opportunity to shine in a new arena and create friendships that last a lifetime.
